so exciting... my female senegal is laying eggs all over the place. only problem is both male senegals (one is albino) are eating the eggs!!! i dont have an extra tank right now. is there anything i can do to save some eggs?

i want to post this right away. i will give details and try to get pics up later. very cool.

not much you can do with out another tank the best thing you can do is hide the eggs in a dark place but make sure you dont put alot of preasure on the eggs they are very fragil and good look to you save as many as you can make sure you buy a tank to put the fry in

Nope nt really this time around but next time be ready
THE TANKS for breedin-One should have a soft sandy substrate and several low bushy plants such as
Java fern (Microsorium pteropus)This is the breeding tank. This is where the eggs will be laid (hopefully) and a good secure cover. The second tank for hatching and raising the fry. This tank should have no substrate and use sponge flters.
The hatching tank-When the mating is concluded remove the plants with the eggs or any eggs you may find scattered about as quickly as possible and place them in the hatching tank .This tank should be kept at 82 degrees with a PH value between 6.5 and 7.0.If things have gone well you should see hatching within 60 hours . The young resemble tadpoles and will adhere to
plants and rocks , and live off yolk sacs for approx 6-7 days after which they will need feeding.
Foods include
baby brine shrimp
finely chopped bloodworms
mysis shrimp .
It is sadly at this time death rates increase do to fighting and canibalism if possible the fry should be seperated in individual containers for several weeks or raised in a tank with lots of
Java fern (Microsorium pteropus)to hide from eachother . Once they reach approx.4 cm the odds of survival increase -Anne

Too bad this time around. But at least you know you are taking care of them good enough to get them to breed. Congrats.

ok, i got emergency tank. its a 30 gal tall. i filled it almost half way with main tank water. it didnt look like the female was laying anymore eggs so i took the rock that had all of the moss and eggs on it and put it in the new tank. i can only see about a dozen eggs on the moss and rock but there maybe more under the moss. i dont have a sponge filter. so things are not looking so good for this spawn. we will see what happens.

thank you so much for the fast replys Oscar, Anne, and Honda.

i will post pics of the eggs if i they came out, later.

Females can lay in excess of 300 eggs this could go on for a couple of days. The eggs are
approx .9-1mm in size-Anne

the spawning was very interesting to watch. it was excactly like the mating rituals i have read about bichirs. the female went to the surface 4 or 5 times. when one of the males came over. he slid parallel starting in the back nudging her body with his head all the way untill they were side by side. she swam over to my moss covered rocks and started burrowing her head in it with the male. once there, they started to shake their tails on each other pretty vigorously. after they were done she swam away and did same thing again, going to the surface. both males had their anal fins cuped and turned to the side. the females anal fin also looked weird, kind of swollen and darker than usual. both males took turns with her. it is kind of interesting because one of them is an albino. he is still pretty young, little over 6" so i was surprized to see him mating.

well i have some pictures, but they didnt turn out as good as i had hoped. wish i had a video of it.
