Are bichir able to thrive on fine sand like marine sands or are they susceptible to compaction. Do they ever accidentally swallow gravel or sand? I have different options as far as substrate but I would like to know if you think it is safe to go with something as fine marine sand. I have some in my tank now and I would love to just use it in the bichir rather than buy some more substrate! Let me know your thoughts!

I dont know how fine marine sand is but mine dont have a problem with my fine white sand or the slightly bigger fine gravel,i think the problem starts when the gravel is at a size that cant be passed through the fish, like massivore pellet sized..hope this helped.

The sand is sometimes called sugar sand cause that is how fine it is. The PH should be neutralized by the wood that going in my tank. I'm just curious cause if a lizard eats a certain amount of sand it causes impaction or blockage of the stomache.

I am also interested because this happened to my lizard. That was an expensive vet bill...

I have my bichirs, and have always had them with very fine sand. Alot of my friends use this for their bichirs aswell.

But if the sand you are talking about is like pulver then i would say do not use it !

The sand im using is 0,2 to 1,0 millimeter sandcorns and i know that this is safe, never been a problem. (btw 10 millimeter = 1cm)

if its smaller than this then it might cause problems, but im not sure.

It will be ingested, but will it be passed? I use a very fine gravel(half size grain of rice) that is often ingested with no issues. I see it in the waste that gets sucked into the filter. I would think a finer grain would be passed easily with the feces.
