So I put in a small piece of shrimp in the tank, but it was a little too big and the bichir snatched it... he's about 4 inches and he is trying to swallow the piece of shrimp,so what happens when they try to swallow food that is too big for them? Does it just go down or do they spit it out if it's truly too big?

ok so he swallowed it, but now there's a big lump in his stomach.. is it ok?

ok thanks, btw, what should be his staple diet? and where can i buy earthworms

What kind of bichir? "dinosaur bichir"? The natural diet of Polypterus senegalus is insects (dragonfly, caddisfly, grasshoppers, crickets, pondskaters, flies) and crustaceans (crabs).

I would just feed it New Life Spectrum 3mm sinking pellets 1-2 times a day.

Fish, reptiles, snakes, lions, all eat meals "too big". Sometimes they eat another fish 80% their size. Then they sit and rest for a couple days or weeks.

Other people have posted nice threads of senegals eating crayfish. You could feed your senegal crayfish when it gets bigger!
