Has anybody had any luck with this? Right now I've got two juvenile sen's and a juvenile jack dempsey and they seem to be ok in my 65. The dempsey had started to fin-nip a bit (more than I was comfortable with, really) in the 20g, but now in the larger tank with better territory I haven't noticed any of it. Although nobody has really seemed to claim anything specific...I have one large rock cave and one piece of rooty driftwood that forms a sweet cave on its own...all 3 fish seem to occupy both caves and hang around the fake tree I have in there as well.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what else I can add to the tank though. I'd like to get at least 3-4 more fish, or a school of 5-6 dither-type fish. But I'm having a hard time between finding them that grow to a size the bichirs won't eat, but also won't outgrow the tank, but also won't be so passive that the dempsey just kills everything, but also won't be so hostile that they mix with the dempsey and stir things up and start attacking the bichirs :nilly: I just don't know :nilly:

A guy at one of the LFS (petsmart) mentioned that he'd successfully kept a mature sen in an african cichlid tank. His thinking was that since I had the Jack I needed some of the more aggressive cichlids to go with...like a green terror etc. I sparked the conversation by asking about severums, but he thought they would just get torn up by the dempsey.

I think its going to come down to letting the dempsey mature and seeing what his temperament is going to be, and then figuring it out from there, but I don't know. I'm not in a HUGE rush to get more fish, but I would like to go ahead and figure it out/try SOMETHING out soon, you know?

I'm not stuck on cichlids, but I don't know of much anything else that I could do now that I have the jack dempsey.

edit: Its a standard 65gallon tank, rena xp3, keeping it at 80*, sand substrate, driftwood/rocks for decor, no plants, regular fluorescent lighting, PH around 7. I can mess with the temperature of course, but I don't want to start messing with the PH at all. I'd be willing to try plants, but everything I've heard says don't bother with the cichlids, they'll just tear them up; I'm not really sure I'm ready to try plants yet anyways, I don't have the money to buy any sort of upgraded light system, so I'd be pretty limited by that anyways. I also don't have the cash to add more filtration right now.

Thats good to know. I'm getting more interested in the green terror, might test the waters with one.

I'm starting to think
2x senegal bichir
1x jack dempsey
1x green terror
2-3x severum

and then either
1x african brown knife
1x pictus cat. I haven't researched the pictus cat at all, I just noticed today at petsmart that it says they only get to around 8 inches and I've always thought they seemed interesting. So I'm gonna look into these and see whats up with them.

Dude at petsmart told me the severums probably wouldn't make it when I told him I had a jack dempsey, but I'd like some second opinions on that.

I have a fairlly large oscar in with mine although most of my bichir's are the bigger than the oscar apart from the ornate and senegal. both of which have been fine for over a year now. I;ve not tried with any agressive Cichlid's yet .

I do however have midas in with rope fish and these are ok (once again the rope fish are bigger than midas)

might want to look at this thread from yesterday asking the same thing.

Close...but stocking a 220 is a lot different than stocking a 65. Thanks.

Cool. I'm not terribly interested in oscars, They'd outgrow my tank way too fast anyways and they just don't really call my name:screwy: For now I think I might add a pictus cat and look at a green terror and severum. Gotta see if the severums really will get torn up by the dempsey and the terror.

edit: not to mention after adding a pictus and a green terror I really might not even have room for anything else looking at full-grown sizes.

I woudl not do a single pictus. They tend to like to be in small groups I find. I would get no less then 2 and 3 would be more ideal.

Mine are still pretty small and they top off around 4-6 inches long...which is why it is easy to keep a small school of em.

I would also throw out a vote for a green terror as they are awesome looking fish BUT you might get one of the few super agressive ones and it can throw everything off. Thankfully mine is pretty easy going in my tank.

how about some silver dollars? or large enough clown loaches? in the past i had 2x senegals, 1x palmas 6x clown loaches, 1x JD, 1x Jag, 1x Green terror, 1x buttikoferi and 3x Sevs - it worked absolutely fine for me for years! this was all in a 6ft tank.

ok so how about this

2x senegal bichir
1x jack dempsey
1x green terror
3x pictus cat

Keeping in mind this is a 65gal, 36"x19" (or so) on the bottom, so the bottom dwellers don't have all the room in the world. I'll hopefully be able to upgrade or at least split into another 55-75long in the next two years or so, but I'm not counting on anything.

I'm not really a fan of the silver dollars...just don't like the way they look, so I'd rather not sit and look at them in the my living room:grino: And I'm kind of leery on getting clown loaches...they seem pretty cool, but they also seem pretty fragile, and right now nothing in my tank is fragile at all. No clue on the pictus cats though, I gotta do some research on those, I'm at work right now though, so I've got enough time to stop and make a post here & there but not to sit down and search around about fish.

edit: so I've just been told that pictus cats get to 8" and sometimes 10", but I've read in another place and just heard in this thread that they're actually 4-6". So whats accurate? They're also apparently sensitive to water quality changes? At 4-6" will they not get eaten by my sen's?

Pictus are pretty hardy fish I have found. They even tell my oscars to get out when the oscars want to investigate one of the driftwood caves. lol

Your lineup looks good to me but I know nothing of bichnirs so i can not comment on them.
