my true love lies with bichirs but my love of erynthius erynthius (sp?) aka red hi fin wolf fish is also pretty strong, does anyone have exp with a combo like the red wolf and an ornate bichir? or any other type of bichir? I would love to add a delhezi, beutikoferri or retro but I don't want it to be beaten to death by the wolf.

Any sort of input would be greatly appreciated. the guy at the lfs said they'd be just fine as long as the sizes are right, which they are (the bichir outlengths and outjaws the wolf, but the wolf beats it in girth at the middle) so I went on that for a while, now after being on here for a bit I'm not so sure. any input at all would be awesome

thanks in advance,

IMO it's one of those thinks where you can keep them together but don't be surprised if you wake up one morning and all your polys are ripped up, but then again i'm not an expert at wolf fish, but i've heard they are very aggressive

yes they are. But, i have an Erynthius (may be spelled worng) not a Hoplias, the Hoplias specie are known to almost always maul tankmates but not so much with the erynthius. Hoplias are like black wolves, aimara, columbian, etc more aggro then mine. I hope as the bichir gets larger then him though he stops messing with it at all.

Ornate will not do well with red high fin wolffish as the ornate will soon eat the wolf. I had a 8" high fin red wolf that was eaten by my palmas polli which was 13". also another 7.5" high fin red wolf that was ripped apart by my 10" cb delehezi. A senegal or a mokelebhembe are your best choice if you plan on keeping bichirs and red high fin wolf. As my 5" red wolf is doin well with them.

My red wolf was fine with my or poly never had any probs with them together ( unfortunately my aro ate my wolf fish :'( but it was a good 8" ) and my birchirs about 10"

Thanks for the input guys, once my ornate gets much larger then the wolf i will more then likely put him in his own tank now i know an ornate will eat a wolf if big enough. The wolf is a pretty good size, around 6 in and pretty thick. He is a voracious eater.

It's a good combo IMO if you are tolerable with mild ripped fins on your bichirs. The aggression and personality are a hit and miss. i kept a 6 inch red wolf with a bunch of 6 inch bichirs with mild scrapes from time to time. Ultimately, i had to sell my red wolf because it was outcompeting all my fish for food.

Same here man! thats why i hand feed and specifically get him full first before the Ornate and he'll usually leave some feeders for him and ill drop pellets in his claimed zone that i see him munch. I may be adding a beuttokoferi soon and i dont want it to be harassed to death, itll be a couple in smaller then the ornate and im kind of worried about that. Will they grow at the same rate with a divider in the tank? or will they grow at a rate like theyre in a tank of half the water?

Mines getting beefy, it is voracious thats why i keep the temp on the lower side in that tank to keep his metabolism low. i really do think i need to put him in his own tank. i really dont want to get rid of him, i love the lil guy and he seems to like me, they are quite personable as long as you keep em happy. I love this ones personality it is my first one though
