just want to ask something about bichirs and plecos.
i know that a pleco will suck the slime of a bichir, and suck it to death once the pleco tastes the slime.

i heard that some pleco will not do that, like a royal pleco, black adonis. is this true?
im planning to put a 3" butterfly pleco (l52) in my bichir tank coz im having problems with algae and i dont want to keep cleaning the glass coz its freaking out my bichirs and tigers.

is this ok and safe?

thanks :)

i have a common pleco in my tank. it does not bother the bichers. i guess its trial and error. if you do add one to the tank keep a close eye on everything.

wow, thats cool. maybe your pleco are well fed

do you think a pleco can kill a bichir in a day? and i saw some pictures of bichirs slime being sucked off, it looks ugly. will the slime come back?

The removal of the slimecoat is bad enough but the slimecoat will be replaced in approx 24 hours in a healthy bichir.
The real problem is the plecos rasping teeth damaging the scalation leaving the bichir highly vulnerable to infection-Anne

i had a gibbiceps in my tank wit my plecos... i took it out as soon as i heard bout this... i hadnt noticed any strange behaviour but i love my bichirs... i dun wanna risk it.... look into getting a flagtail characin... they are really good algae eaters and dont eat slime coats... im gettin one myself aswell...

If your talking about the Flag Fin Prochilodus or Fei Feng(s?)(and I think you are), well...I hate to burst your bubble, but they CAN be some of the worst slime coat suckers around! I've HEARD but not experienced many horror stories of these guys removing the slime coat of many types of fish, not just polys.

I have 3 plecos in a tank with 2 bichers and the only one I have seen bothering the bichers was the smallest one(about 3" long), and he just did it by accident and quickly moved on.
my gibbiceps and common don't bother them... as long as the bichers stay away from their food.:headbang2
