Last night I was cleaning out my fish tank as I do every month 1/2 and I was putting my largest senegal bichir in the tank...then he jumped out of the net. I thought he would just lay there but he actually started walking with his front fins! When I picked him up he cut my hands with his spines. But I didn't let him stay on the floor for more than 10 seconds. Then I picked him up and put him in the tank. That was really cool.

P.S. Don't try this at home.

Their pectoral girdle is evolved enough for it to be used or rudimentary locomotion on land. They're also able to breathe atmospheric oxygen, so while not recommended, I think it could survive out of the water for longer if skin is kept moist.

I bought a Delhezi Saturday and it jumped out of the net at the fish store. I bet we (the owner, an employee, and myself) spent 15-20 minutes looking for him. He was probably 5 foot away under the base of the tank next to where he jumped out. Seems to be fine now. I gained alot of respect for their ability to motivate on land...

that what we called monster..
poly live among dinosaur..and look like dinosaur..
no wonder their extreme survival skill still can be seen these days..

Yes I have noticed that they do breath air some. Now we really know why they are prehistoric fish.
