What kinds of large south american cichlids can easily be kept in mated pairs? Oscars, Dempseys, Jaguars, Doviis, Flowerhorns, Red Terrors, etc? Are there any that can coexist with another species, assuming that one is male and the other female? (ex. a Jaguar and a Festae?)

What size tank? You listed some big mean fish. A pair of any of those would not be "easy" by themselves. With other species? Nah.... Pair of Dovii need their own tank. Pair of Festae? Pair of Flowerhorns? Very hard on tankmates, more so when breeding.

I have a Breidohri and Fenestratus pairing up now, and THEY'RE problematic in a 540 gallon tank. I can't imagine a pair of Jags in that tank. Or Festae. Or Dovii...

Breeding is a pain.

Now, if you have more than one tank, and you can give a pair their own tank to themselves, if it's big enough, that'd work. I'd say a 125 or bigger.

I kept my haitiensus pair together for about 5 years in a 150 gal 6ft tank.
After a spawn the male would need to be moved to keep the fry from cannibalizing him, but once the fry were removed, she always accepted him back.
They would not allow any tank mates though, I believe the 150 was just large enough to accommodate the pair.
He grew to about 14", the female maybe 11".

I've bred green terrors with tank mates. The problem with them is they weren't aggressive enough to keep the convicts and plecosnfrom eating fry and eggs. I would say you could have a pair in a 90 gallon

I keep Paratheraps almost exclusively, and I love em, but if I wanted to breed fish in a community with other species, I think I'd go with smaller species (like sajica, labridens) or look into Severums. Severums look great, and I "think" a lot less aggression.
