I recommend 2 x 400 Watt submersible at oposite ends of the tank.
If one fails closed, you won't cook your fish.

Being in AZ, you may not need one at all.
Check into an inline unit if you plan to use any cans.
I don't understand the sub. only statement either.

Submersibles or in filtertype filters are better being more flexible in use. I too would use a pair rather than just one.
