I have a black veil angel and the problems started with my juvenile clown knife picking on it. So i seperated the knife a few days ago and this morning and looked in the tank and all I could say was oh my god. The whole dorsal fin in missing on my angel! Thats a huge freaken fin to just be eaten off!! Theres long strands left. I cant figure out what could have done it though. All thats in the tank is a pleco, 2 weather loaches, and some corey cats. The only I can think that did could be the pleco but how the heck could it have mangaged to get that close to a free swimming fish let alone close enough to suck off the fin...I have the Angel in a small tub with a bubbler and some water conditioner that repairs split fins to help heal it enough to get it back in its home. Is it possible that it could have gotten caught between the rocks I have pilled up in the tank?? Ugh someone please help me...

Hi, it is possible that the pleco was sucking on the fins while your Angel Fish slept. I've had larger Plecos suck doughnuts on my fish at night and do some serious fin damage, especially to my viel tails while they slept. The issues of sucking on fish would usually start when they (the plecos) approached sizes over 6". At that size they do start to require more protien than is normally fed to these fish. Also, the loaches, they might also be doing some damage. They can be fin nippers. I have had angels with this type of fin damage before and they survived it. Salt with a little Meth Blue and daily water changes and a good high fat/protien diet brought them back. It might take up to 4 months for the stubby fin to regenerate to a somewhat normal appearance, but it will pull thru.
Best of luck to you!!

Ok thank you so much. Im going to keep is seperated until the fin heals a little better. She seemed to swim ok but theres a decent current in the tank so i decided that she would be better in a more slow water movement spot. Um Im thinking its the pleco, that fish is aggressive and has the suction power of a vaccuum haha. I remember one time I was doing a water change and I was trying to get him off the glass into the net and I couldnt peel him off!!

i find it hard to believe that a pleco would do that, what are you feeding the pleco? i would think a well fed pleco would pretty much leave everything else alone, especially if its just a common pleco and not a carnivorous pleco. but i guess it is possible, definitely more likely him than any of the other fish, but the angel should pull through now that you have it by itself, just make sure to keep the water super clean and feed multiple small meals a day to beef it up

I had to say sorry to the pleco lol It was fin rot, the next day there was white stuff around the fin damage and a few red spots. It had moved down to the tail so I went and got some meds for it. I put it in last night for the first time and this morning there wasnt any more fin rot that I could see thankfully. It was an extremely severe case. I believe it was from stress though from being moved from tank to tank like I explained above. Ill keep everyone updated
