Being the biggest guy in the tank does not guarantee dominant. This 7 inch Bifas is challenged by a pair of Cryptoheros panamensis half its size, and ............

a smaller Green Terror gave him no respect either. It's one against three, and the odd is not on his side yet. But the balance of power will not last long, as he will continue to outgrow his rivals.

With cichlids it is often about investment, could be territory such as a potential spawning site, or who was in the tank first, even an algae covered rock.
A few years back I had a small pair of Coptodon bythobates (2 -3") that decided to spawn in a 150 gal community tank.
Any fish that came near their area, be it a 6" Parachromis, or similar size Vieja would be killed, and the carcass dragged over and fed to the bythobates fry.
