i have an 8'x3'x14" tank that i would like to use as a growout for a rtc and tsn. obviously the tanks depth is an issue but im wondering how long large roughly i could grow these fish out in it?

14" is an obvious problem when talking growing out a RTC & TSN...huh... I'd think you could keep them in there for at least a year or two before really having to find another option.. I have a one and a half year old RTC in my pool and he's approaching 30" already. I'd be worried more about one of them braking the aquarium glass at this size more then anything, they do tend to spaz and blot into things..

i do have a 10' pool for my fish, just nowhere to set it up yet lol. i also have a 300g tub or could build a pond when the time comes, so theres options for the future.

With 14" depth, I'd guess perhaps a year. Footprint is excellent though.

As for the breaking the glass... it's a shallow tank, so indeed could be thinner-walled than usual.

Still, not discounting the experience and knowledge of others at all, I thought I'd mention that I always thought the breaking incidents had little to do with the fish. Primarily, they are a result of tank shortcomings. Either a manufacturers defect, or glass not thick enough, bowing too much, or a bad install, uneven stand = glass is under stress, just about to crack.

Also, if we are talking acrylic - chances of that breaking are 100 smaller. If we are talking a large glass tank, try taking a piece of glass of the right thickness and break it say with a hammer. You will amaze yourself how strong a blow it will require and how many of them and how tough glass is.

They call them tank busters because of hard heads from bone growing at the surface and them smashing through tanks when they possibly freak out at something or just ram it hard.

You don't have a basement to set that tub or pool up in?

i got room for the tub(or diy pond) in my small shop, but not enough room atm for the pool. we will be moving whithin a couple years to a new house with garage, then its on...

i suppose i will enjoy them in the tank as long asi find feasable till i move them to larger digs.

I may be wrong but I tend to think you are taking this nickname too literally while it is mostly a figurative comparison. See this for instance: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-tankbuster.htm

my rtc and achara are both in the 265g until the rtc gets too big for it. He's been in there for about a year and guessing upon his growth rate, which has slowed down, but still, will need to be moved again within another year. We first moved him into there around 16-18". Has grown at least 6 more inches in past year. Again, these are only estimates as its body disaportionate size is misleading. I dread the day I catch him with my beloved achara going into it's mouth as rtc mouths are enormous and misleading. He's a tad smaller than the achara, although a huge head, but every couple of weeks nips a chunk out of the achara's fins. Big chunks. Mainly happens when he's not fed every other day.

And, as I'm currently in the same dilemna as things didn't go as planned in the last 2 years for us to move, I do not have a basement to set up his indoor "pond". Have been thinking of using the garage, although it's bitter cold in there in the winter. No real insulation or heating vents unless I leave one of the connecting doors open for the heat to escape into.
