I have an 18.5 inch Florida gar with an 8-9 inch female jaguar cichlid and 8" male jack Dempsey. They are in a 180 gallon, 6'x2'x2' aquarium with a fluval fx5. I have an Oscar that's 2" growing in another tank. How do you think the cichlids will get along with the gar? Right now they do fine but sometimes they spook the gar and that's it. I'm mostly worried about the Oscar because he seems pretty aggressive already. The other cichlids are pretty chill most of the time. So how do you think their compatibly will work out? Any similar experiences with these fish? Anything to look out for or anything to help reduce aggression?

Inb4 gar will need larger aquarium

When I had cihclids I never mixed them with my gars because I always read it is a no no due to the agressive feeding of the cichlids that the gars cannot compete with (not to mention the spooking factor).
Not first hand experience, but those are the reasons I never mixed them

I had a 14 " male jag and a 12" spotted gar.jag slammed him into the tank lid and broke the gars back. ....it was terrible. .would never mix large aggressive cichlids and another gar again

You need a bigger tank. I've heard of gars actually breaking their own back as well from being spooked and hitting the glass hard enough to break their spines. Chefwill is right a cichlid is built like a tank-not just a tank but a belligerent tank that can turn around a lot faster. Something like a JD that's just going to hide in the rocks is one thing- red terrors and red devils? An Oscar and a JAG? Nah man.

I actually had a gar with large Oscars 12-14" and they took a nip here and there and stressed the poor gar a lot. I eventually gave him away because I felt bad for him.
