ok,ive got a 75 gallon tank and am planning to go to a 240 in say 2 monthes .if i were to buy a cannister filter for the 240 now and hook it up to the 75 is that ok?iv got an oscar pbass and 2 cats in it.they are smaller say 6 in each.i do weekly water changes and am starting to clog hot filters on a regular basis.do u think a massive filter will hurt me in any way. the cats are juranesse.

I would say add a large canister to the 75 and keep the HOB also then when you setup the 240, your filter will already be seed with bb

You'd be just fine.If you can afford the $$$ get one of the Eheim large filters 2262, 2260, or a 2080. I'm running Fluval and am slowly going to switch over to Eheim as I can afford it. On the cheaper side the Aquatop CF500 has been getting great reviews. On the HOB side Aquaclear if king of the hill AC110.

If your new filter causes too much water movement for the tank size, throttle back the return a little. Glad to see someone plan ahead. I agree, leave your HOB in place to seed everything.

I'm kinda with JC, buy a fliter for the 75G, then use the media from that filter to seed the 75G sump for the 240G.

BEWARE THAT USING 75 gallon for future sump can get expensive ....big can is probably going to be less money (if you dont know about diy sump)and surely less trouble....an fx 5 and a big hob will handle a lightly stocked 240 (at least for a good while...)and adding a big can or even AQUA CLEAR 110 hob might be all you ever need to add to that future 240

Disagree, your going to need an fx5 on that tank at a min, using even a cheap found 55 gallon it that 75 as a sump would be great. Also depends if your 240 is going to be drilled, submerged pump, 2 filter socks, and some pond matrix and that would make a great sump setup for yourself.
