this is usually true in the males..but it looks alright especially if its a show fish

I hate the disgustingly huge nuchal humps that some people seem to think are so impressive...looks like a grossly overgrown tumour. I do like them with kind of a medium-sized hump, though, rather than just a sloping forehead...my 5" female FH has more of a hump at this point than yours does, but your fish is still nice looking.

You should post this in the hybrid section you would get a better response.

But in any case I personaly prefer a small to small/medium in my cichlids but I dont like flowerhorns :p What was wrong with a trimac/Devil/whatever else they put in those things In the first place that they needed to be fiddled with

moved to hybrids section for you

personally, I like a medium to slightly large hump but there is definitely a such a thing as too big. if it extends outward past the snout of the fish, that's when it is too large, imo. here are a couple pics of my newest red devil. this first pic was taken right after I got him in mid-
February.

a lot of things can affect the size of the nuchal hump. genetics will play the biggest part. many flowerhorns are specifically bred for large nuchal humps. if the fish has a defined territory and another fish to show dominance over then the hump will usually grow larger. for instance, if you have 2 males in the same tank with a divider (like I have my red devil setup in now) then the humps will grow larger. once I put the divider in the tank and another male on the other side, his hump got bigger, but then it got bigger still when I put a clay pot in there for him to claim as a territory. diet also plays a role...some foods will encourage hump growth. I was told that Hikari Oranda Gold and possibly even Hikari Lion Head formula will encourage hump growth.

WOW! When you got your fish in Mid February it looks yellowish... and now it is reddish orange? Does the color on the RD change on it's own? Do they all change like that?
I kinda wanna try the method for getting a bigger hump on my RD.... but i have a question... after you acheive the hump on the head, and now you take the divider away, will the hump shrink???

i use to not like them but i'm starting to like the medium size lumps....my 3 inch fh is starting to develop a lump ...it's so cute right now, the trick is if you want the lump feed him lots and lots of food, if you don't feed him moderatly:thumbsup:

if I took away the divider and the other male then his hump probably would go down but it probably wouldn't go away completely. they will also grow a larger hump with females around because hump size is one of the ways they attract a female. :)
