My new j.d., Big Jack died tonight!

Big Jack was a rescue. The pet store had him for three months. He was so ugly no one wanted him, the store was going to freeze him. Big Jack couldn't close his mouth, his back was arched, he had horrid pop-eye and he had never eaten anything but feeder goldfish and cichlid sticks. I took him home last week.

He was in a 30 gallon QT and was looking really good (for Big Jack anyways, he always looked a little torn up) until Christmas eve. He started getting white around his gills and fins. He just got worse from there. The salt I added to his tank the 24th wasn't helping, so yesterday I started treating with Maracyn plus, which has worked some miracles for me before. I changed 50% of his water everyday.

I don't know what happened. He just never got any better. I really liked this fish, even though I only had him for a week.

I feel terrible, I was so excited to get this fish home and I KILLED HIM!

BTW, the whitish patches on Big Jack appeared over an hour's time as he was dying. It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

bummer man, thing was huge tho,

ive seen the same type of discoloring after I catch trout out of the stream..
that was a huge jac its sad to see a fish like that go, at least you gave him a try..

What gets to me the most is he hung in there all that time at the pet store. He was pretty stressed out from being caught, he was banged around the tank and the kid couldn't hold the net and dropped him. Still, I've seen worse fish recover pretty fast with good water and food.

This fish just never got better, only worse. I keep wondering what I did to him, why couldn't I cure him?

Go test the tank you got him from....And then compare it to yours. The white looks like missing scales and things. When I have a fish die in the night and wake up to it, it always looks like your fish. There are a few things I suspect, like big fish stress (how long was the car ride?) Salinity, and just not adjusting to the new params. How did you acclimate him? By that I mean what all did you do before you put him in the tank.

Kudos to you for giving him a chance to a real life, poor fella!! Sorry to hear you lost him, but it sounds like you did everything you could for him...you didn't kill him, the conditions he was living in before you killed him. *Big Hugs* to you for at least trying!!!

Of course it wasnt your fault if he died and was brought as a vegetable. All he did was probably spent his last week in a slightly bigger (maybe smaller?) tank with some meds that probably wouldnt of worked anyway due to his health thus far.
