I have this feeling that if I put a divider in his tank he'll be able to bust through it. Anyone have a 12 to 14 inch brute successfully plow through a sheet or two of egg crate dividers?

My big boy is in my avatar he is only 11" and knocks down dividers like nothing. . I have suction cups and have even tied the egg crate and he simply goes for the bottom and flips the divider. but he ovly does it when he feels like it . Dividers are good with fish under 8" larger fish will simply knock it down.

That's what I was thinking... I use the clear suction hooks that are sold at Lowes but I'm not worried about the hooks giving in. My guy hits the glass pretty hard sometimes and I'm thinking that he can make plastic seem like paper.

it's how well u secure it.

Bump by bump, they can loosen up the divider, make a gap, then make their way through. Put heavy rocks on both sides of the divider and you'll be safe day by day

wedge the egg crate in place, using pvc pipe at top & bottom on both sides.

if it egg crate they would cut there face all up before they break it like said wedge with pvc on both sides and cover with sand

my bullet proof divider system is a little strange but here goes
you will need plastic egg crates and go to rona or homedepot and get some copper pipe insulation (basically pool noodle only smaller) cut the crate so it will just fit , slide the (pool noodle)copper pipe insulation over it and shove it in place,

if you cant make the crating fit or its in between one full square i have success with those cutting boards at the dollar store.
i know it sounds strange but hey, nothing going through that, however when not using crating it does f up the water flow between sides
hope it helps, worked in the past for me with my red devil... and he is a class a jerk

Glass divider works best with brutes insures your other fish is safe, silicone plastic on the sides of the glass and wedge it tight
