Ok I was walking through my LFS and I saw what I am almost positive is a red terror. Well I thought it was cool looking even at 2 inches. So.....I got my mom to buy it. Now I'm positive that it will out grow a 120 if it's a male but would it be ok in the tank if its a female? And would it be ok with a GT? I am some what willing to get rid of it if I have to.

Your tanks large enough for both if youd like. In any case your talking about YEARS before it reaches full adult size and even then a 120 should be fine as long as it dosn't have a ton of tank mates.

Putting a RD and GT together? It depends on the individual fish. Normally I'd say don't try it but if they are both in the 2" range and grow up together then it might be possible.

I had a 10" green terrer in a 100 gallon tank and introduced a 6" red to the tank and he damn near killed all my fish including the GT that was 4 inches bigger. Needless to say the red terror went back to the lfs a few days later!!!

i had a 5" RT, with an 9" GT, and a breeding pair of 10" severums and my arow in a 120g....they were all fine together...till my male Severum had ago at the GT and the GT didnt make it....but the GT and
RT were fine together (GT was male, RT was female) and there was almost no decor in the tank....heres a pic of the old tank....

No it's not a big mistake. I mean your festae is going to be the top dog no matter what you do about it. He will be able to take the GT down at any size. Festae just have a stronger jaw structure than a GT has. So more strength is alway going to win. Festae are slow growers and same with GT's so it will be a LONG time before any upgrade is needed. When the Festae reaches a length of 14" I say get him 6 footer. He will need the extra length. They can achieve lengths of 16"-18" in home aquaria but this takes many years. Same as a Jag. Jags will shoot up to that 12" mark in no time but will grow so damn slow after and if kept long enough 10-12 years you may have yourself a 16"-18" fish.

You sure it's a red terror? 90% of the red terrors I see are Urophthalmus.

I'm pretty sure. The bars are faded a little for some reason(I think my brother was running around in my room wich could have stressed him out) but the front bars look like the make a Y shape. Some of the fish at the pet store had a definate Y shape but were to small:(

:(that's what I was afraid of. I can't get a six footer in my room. I'm getting a summer job next year so I might be able to get enough money to set up a tank in my garage but I'm not sure that will work or if my Dad will allow me.

Ok a easy confirmation of this is: Is the tail spot above the lateral line? If not then it's Uro if it is Festae then it will be above and extend particially onto the tail. The Y bar is another good way to tell but some species may have faint markings. I have seen wild female festae with really no stripes so it's kinda hard to confirm definately by that way. Uro's will usually have more drab colors anyways and won't have as much or any blue speckling on tail and body.

Cross, compared to a midas or trimac, sure a festae will be slower growing. But compared to a common gold saum GT, they will be around equal in growth rates. My male festae hit 7" within the first year...and that's including spawning activities for 3-4 months of that first year. The problem with mixing the very aggressive fish with something like a GT is that the GT will TRY to dominate and be seriously outclassed. Which will probably lead to its death. A 120g will give you more time than a smaller tank, but even a female festae will probably not tolerate many, if any, tankmates eventually.

You may get lucky and have it work. But I'd be prepared in advance for it NOT to work.
