Ok, so i've got a 17" male umbee and a 12" female in a split 180g. I've tried the method of breeding where you put a grate in between that only the female can go through, but she seems too scared to ever go on his side. If that is the case, i don't want to force them together, but i really want to see if they can breed. Does anyone have any ideas short of a 5000 gallon tank?

Take out the divider and see what happens. Do it on a weekend when you can stay home and watch them though. If you are there it won't be that big of a deal if the fighting gets nasty. And I am also just going to warn you that you will be extremely lucky if they don't fight. It is almost a sure thing that they will at least jaw lock. Good luck with them and I hope you can get them to breed. BTW I think it would be cool to see some pictures.

LOL It can happen in the ten minutes you walk away to get a drink.

Leave the divider in, put the breeding pot or rock or whatever next to the eggcrate on the female's side. THey will breed right through the egg crate. If you want to increase chances on her traveling back and forth, cut three or four holes at different levels. It will make her feel more at ease with traveling back and forth.

With tow Umbee that size in a 180 I would HIGHLY reccomend a weekly water change somewhere in the neighborhood of 75%. Followed by bumping up the temperature. Try putting the water in the tank cooler and let the heater warm it up. This stimulates the urge to breed.

You could also try a different type of partial divider...one where there is an opening at the bottom. If they are interested in breeding the female will lay the eggs near the divider and the male will still be able to fertilize them. Just prop the divider up on a flat stone or something like that.
