the jungle
yesterday i got a small, slightly scrawny guyana ray. i assumed that my water parameters would be ok for him and he has been living happily and feeding well for 24 hours but i just got a shock when i looked at my tap water readings and found out that that nitrate is 40 ppm! as i understand, my ray is not going to stand this for long. i guess he will have to go back to my lfs as they were keeping it in RO/ tap water mix. is this my only option apart from buying a RO unit? WHAT SHOULD I DO????????

nitrates are not harmfull to rays

its amonia and nitrite you need to worrie about

well they are both zero. how come everywhere i have ever read about stingrays says that stingrays are also succeptable to nitrate poisoning?
im sure you know more than i do but its just that whenever i have read on websites about rays, they all say that 10ppm is the maximum that they shoud be exposed to...

Nitrates are not harmful to rays but you still should keep doing water changes to keep it down it may be uncomfortable to them if the nitrates are high.

but however many water changes i do, the lowest i can get it to is 40ppm because thats what my tap water is which is supposedly too much for a ray...

once you get the ray feeding and it gets a bit bigger chances are the nitrates in your tank will be 80ppm so the water change will still be better

if i chould get my tank water to 40ppm i would be very happy

who ever is telling you the water needs to be 10ppm or below is wrong it would be great if it was but in the real world its never going to happen and it wont have any affets on the rays

My thoughts exactly!

Ro is waste of money unless you have reef tank...
