Howdy,

I currently have several inches of sand, on which my two big (30 lbs) rocks rest. Some time in the near future, I want to go "almost bare" because I want to get aquatic :turtle: and don't care for them to stir up my sand. Here's my question: I think the sand distributes the weight of the rocks quite well. Should I have concerns with these rocks resting on the glass bottom only? What adds to my concern is that the stand only supports the outer rims of the tank. The footprint is 6'x24''.

My question is: Does anyone have his/her tank set up like that: Bare bottom, big rocks, rim-only stand?

Thanks,
HarleyK

Hi Harley, i have that same setup and they do quite well... just dont lift them up and drop it on the tank ( even if theres water in it ). My rays even knock those rocks away once in a while.

UP...make em sturdy

if the rock has an irregular shape id be worried about pressure points on the glass its a glass tank right?
Yes, glass. And yes, that's what also worries me. :(

if your that worried about it put a nice flat piece of slate under the rocks..... and what kind of turtle??

That's a great idea. Maybe not slate but plexiglass. Thin, and cut in the shape of the rock. You guys are an inspiration!
The :turtle: will be nothing spectacular, maybe a stinkpot. I heard red-ear sliders go after fish too much, while with a stinkpot, there is at least a chance that it leaves bigger fish alone. FRT are too $$ for me right now. We'll buy a house next year, so I will have to budget for a while. :(

i dont think you need to cut the plexiglass in the shape of the rock the bigger the plexiglass the more the weight of the rock is distributed throughout the glass.

I have several Large rocks (about a square foot) resting on the bare bottom of my 400g tank and the only problem I have is every now and then, when a ray, catfish or my large Pacu go crazy, they can sure move those rocks making noise like 24/7 when your trying to sleep. They tend to go crazy during thunderstorms.:screwy:

if you are not planing on moving the rocks around you can silicon them to the bottom so they dont roll around
