I was wondering on if anybody could help me decide on what to get from my 55 gallon fw tank (empty at the moment) 1-2 banded bichirs or ~30 small fish (neons, guppies etc.) and if you have an +/- o0n the reasons not to or to get these fish

I would go with Polypterus delhezi but the 55 might be a little tight for them.

sounds like most of the members will go for the bichirs, but they will get big in size, so you need to watch out for the water quality, and food quantity when you feed. If you go for the tetras, watch out for the quality of the tetras when you buy them, as they are delicate, but thirty neons in a heavily planted tank can still look good, and will probably be more easy in feeding, water quality, but may get a little boring as bichirs seemed to be more intelligent, so they may be more fun to watch, feed.

i love tiger barbs... i have 12 in my 100g, and they're so fun to watch. i think they could be kept with a bichir. neons always seem really boring to me when i see them in a tank. tiger barbs are somewhat intelligent.

or gold barbs, they ALWAYS stay in a tight little school. penguinfish (aka hockey stick fish) giant danios, silver dollars, rainbow fish, gouramis, angels, glass catfish, you coukd do ctenopoma with the larger fish.

I have a bichir in my 42 hex and had one in an old 55 gallon I had. Theyll be fine.
