I would like to build a 4000 gal tank in my bsmt for freshwater. I have my fish in a 180 now but it will be outgrown soon. Any advise on materials, design or filtration. I have 3 gars, 2 shovelnose cats and a tea cup ray. They are all juveniles now. The biggest is about 8"

what's the budget?

cinderblock in the basement would be cheap enough, then it's either use a liner or use the glass from your 180 and do a build out, as long as ypu keep the glass ontop it wouldn't be a pressure issue. (ie say your new build will be 40" high, as long as you set the glass on the 2nd row of cinder blocks it will be in the same 2' depth as it is now)

then you'd need a sealant like pond armor, hydroband, or one of the cheaper sealants.

do another cinderblock setup for a sump this time without windows and use the same selant and then all you need is plumbing.

cheap way to go too as cinderblocks are just over 1$ a piece mortar is cheap, and the sealant shoud be reaosnable at 100-160$ for the amount you need.

I would like a tank but cost is a factor. I do have some time to save and plan. I do like the cinder block idea. I would like to be able to house a full grown alligator gar. As of now it looks like I have room for a tank 16' long 8' wide and 5' deep.thanks for the input. Any of you good at gar I'd. I looked at primative fishes but unable to find this gar. It is about 8" long olive drab body with black spots, mostly on top of the body. I will try to post a pict but computers are not my cup of tea.

After reading about everyone and building their large tanks it makes my mind start moving and how I would like to build a 1000gal tank in my new house.

After becoming a member here I used to think that a 1500 gallon ayrlic tank was a giant tank but after reading how people are building tanks out of pored cement and cinder blocks with giant windows it makes me want to start drawing out fish tank plans above 3000 to 5000 gallons for a replacement tank when I move for my 75 gallon fish tank.
