I am curious to know, that if you place smaller fish in a large tank to grow out in will they grow faser than if you keep upgrading tanks in responce to their size? like gowing from a 10 gal at 3" to a 20 gal at 5" and so on and so forth or would they grow quicker when placed in say a 55 at 3"?

Thanks,
Kevin

in a small tank as long as you do massive water changes the fish will still grow...problems start if you fall behind on these critical water changes

Well, the fish in my sig are in a 10 now and are growing as I am doing 50-75% wc a day, but I figure they should get more room to grow so I am giving them a 55 to themselves. I was just curious to know if they would grow faster if placed in a much larger tank with more space to 'stretch'?

the larger a tank is, the more water volume to dilute any waste and other secretions, and room the fish has to swim, plus maybe even get upto full speed for a few seconds. any animal would grow faster and be healthier where they have more room, since it gives them a chance to work themselves out and also burn off fat and what not, so that you dont end up with a fat, unhealthy fish.

i honestly dont have any proof to back this up, its just my personal opinion.

its all about water quality a bigger tank is easier to keep the water clean but there have been studies where a fish is kept in a small tank with constant flow of new water and they grow fine point being its not the size of the tank that stunts the growth like alot of people think but the water quality

There are confounding factors. Some small fish may become stressed out in a large tank, especially if they are a species that prefers the close quarters of weedy shallows or tiny creeks. They may also have difficulty finding all of their food in a large tank. The answer is going to have to be "It depends".

It's the water quality not the size of the tank. There are those who raise discus and recommend against the larger tanks. The though being the fish will burn more energy swimming about, instead of bulking up.

Warmer water and multiple smaller frrding will also increase growth along with the cleaner water.

like said before if possible i like to size the tank to the fish when small fish tend to get lost in a big tank and cant find food etc
