i need to know which is more efficient, i have a 240 long 8x2x2 glass, with a 55 gallon sump. i have the chance to upgrade to a 5x3x3 acrylic (roughly) with a 200 gallon sump. which is more efficient in the long run? i currently have some smaller peaceful fish an the biggest one is the naso. so is it smarter to stay with the long tank with more swim room or the shorter tank with more width and the larger sump????

Think that really depends on what fish you intend to keep in the future. A long tank would be great for most tangs, since they love to get up to speed.

But, with that said, the reefer in me says get the bigger tank... more room for corals.

I agree. They do like to swim as far as possible.

Even if you plan on keeping tangs, I would still get the bigger tank. The new tank would be something like a 330-340 gallon. The additional water volume really helps in keeping anything. The sump will contribute big time here as well. Bigger is always better when it comes to tanks.

i really don't wanna do corals though, ive had my battles with fowlr and i think coral might be a little bit much for me lol. what fish would benefit from the added height vs lack of length

None really need more depth. It is the amount of territory to swim. Longer is better, but usually that means bigger, in this case it doesn't. I really think it is a toss up. The bigger tank is a better situation, but not a lot better. The main benefit is way more water volume, like 200 gallons more, which helps keep your system healthy. You will be able to keep a lot more fish in the bigger tank than the smaller one.

It really is up to you whether it will be worth the time and cost to upgrade. I personally would do the upgrade.

I have a 210 and plan to upgrade in the next couple years to something like a 8x3x3 foot.

well in the long run i was hoping to put mainly community fish and a zebra eel in the one i have now. the only difference i see in the bigger one is the chance to put one of the smaller types of rays in, or would that not happen? not sure what type of fish i will put in but im not set on it either, i just like the colors and look of salt vs fresh so the types of fish that go in aren't extremely important to me

It the bigger one you could do pretty much anything except big sharks. The smaller one still leaves you will the ability to get almost anything, just a smaller volume of them. Pretty much all fish are community fish in large tanks as long as they can't fit in each others mouths. The main thing with bigger fish would be compatibility of keeping multiples of the same species.

i thought i couldn't keep more than one tang in my 8 foot due to aggression so that won't be an issue, any other fish i need to be careful of?

The key to tangs, space provided, is odd numbers and dissimilar shapes.

Like three yellow tangs, or..

A yellow tang and a hippo

Except for purples, theyre pretty, but theyre jerks too.
