Hi ladies and gents.
I just scored a 38g i think (36x12x18) with stand and gravel for free (he said it was a 35g) , and was debating what i could stock it with. I already have a 29g pretty, calm, community, so I am looking for a single species, possibly even single fish; a manly-man-like ugly, pissed off tank. I like bigger cichlids or something that could feed upon my livebearer breeding machine's offspring.
I really like JDs, GTs, and the like, but realize this tank isn't big enough. I was just wondering if I was overlooking a similar fish for this size tank, or if I should just scrap this idea, sell this and upgrade to a 55g or such.
Just for info's sake, my water is liquid rock here. Extremely high PH and hardness.

Salvini, Jewels, Blue Acara. Salvini and Acara max at about 8", so alot of filtration is needed.

A signle male Salvini, Firemouth, or Convict Cichlid could work in there as well as a small school of ditcher fish for mid-level and or bottome dwellers.

I like the coloration of the Salvini but the FM is said to be more "peaceful" of the 3, but again it depends on the fish.

you can get like 2 firemouths or convict cichlids..presumed of 2 or 3..or even blue acaras..

I have the perfect fish for your tank:

Gulper Catfish

1) It doesn't need too much room. You could keep a pair of them, and they like to huddle together anyway.
2) It's round and cute, and has a smiley face
3) It's practically a Garbage can with fins: They will happily eat anything you put in there. That includes plants, rocks, fish, and even your cat if he falls in.

And best of all: It is a MONSTER.

Thanks for the responses, guys & gals.
Some great suggestions and info.
The Gulper is awesome. But from what I read, it needs lower PH 6-7. My PH is pushing beyond 8.6. Like, almost off the charts. If I load up on driftwood, like I did in my 29g, i can get it down to 8ish, but I'm not gonna play around with my PH too much, cuz I don't have the time to keep it stable, and don't want it fluctuating too much. Awesome fish though.
Salvinis are a nice looking fish. Would I be able to get away with maybe one of those and possibly a clown or BN pleco? Pushing it? If I threw an AC70 on with an AC20 I have as well, would that be enough filtration? With both, I'd be turning around 400 gph at full throttle, about 10x.
I'd love a piranha, but the wife has already ruled that one out. She got freaked out at an LFS when my 2 year old ran up to an open tub of piranha. He was just looking, but she lost it. lol. Don't blame her really. The tub was on the floor, easy for any kid to put their hands in. Not really good business practise.

i bet you could fit an electric blue JD I've heard there smaller than normal JD's
