Bio Ball formula

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bioballs = Surface area/cu.ft.:100-175

Me personally, I go with the 1/3 rule.
90 gallon tank = 30 gallon bioballs
but that's just me..

Some do 1/2 rule.
100 gallon tank = 50 gallon bioballs.

It all depends on how many fish your gunnu cram in there.
And how paranoid you are. Just get as many as you can in as big of a sump as you can......:D

Honestly I would get as many as you can. Although I never go under the half rule as stated above (1 gal balls for every 2 gals of water)

There is a exception to this tho as tanks get bigger, I have a 265 but I don't have 132 gallons of bio media. I have a 55g sump set up for only bio media and a canister filter and everything is just fine. So it really depends on what size tank your setting up, and what type of fish you have on it.

you people are starting to scare me with 50% and 30% rule ^^

Yes, I too held back on the 1/2 rule for my 300 gallon. I used a 55 gallon sump for it also. I did pack my sump nice and tight though:D

Im setting up a 165 so I would need 82.5 gals of bio?
A gallon of bio is the amount you can fit in that space? So 55 gals of bio is equal to a 55 gal tank filled with bio?

from what I understand the industry standard is 2.2g of bioballs per 100g of tank. I always use that as a target but use more.
