on the box it says that stacked bio balls (when you put them together like lego's) provides more surface area per gallon than if you just dumped them in.

I stacked them in the bucket and counted the amount. then I dumped them in and the amount was actually really close, with the stacked ones only containing a few more than non-stacked. BUT i would imagine there is more contact between the stacked balls and thus surface area is lost. what do you all think about this?

if all the balls are facing the same direction (stacked) is it better than non-stacked and the balls facing random directions?

All of mine are going in canisters along with Seachem Matrix biomedia to fill in the gaps. Let me know what you do or think.

yeah I noticed you only fit a little more that way then if you dumped them in but I also noticed the water flows much more evenly over a nice "stack" of connected bioballs......so as opposed to adding more surface area it could be that it just utilizes more of the available surface area that way, making it a bit more efficient.

I don't think it necessarily is supposed to fit more. I think it makes a better trickle when you stack them. Meaning more of the surface area is used. I'm not sure though.
