Should I use these in all 3 levels with the white hard foam they give you?????????

Yes bad idea there is not alot of room in the baskets and bio balls tend to do better if they are not fully submerged. I use bio max in mine.

Also if you are talking about the buffer pads or polish pads. you might want to pass on that too b/c they tend to clog very easy and you will end up tearing ithe FX5 down more often then you really need to to replace the pads.

Use ceramic media. It has a ton higher surface area than bioballs, which work best in a wet/dry filter.

Quoting this for truth, any highly porous media will be more effective. Seachem Matrix or EHFI (Eheim) medias are top quality.

ok so should I replace some of the white plishining pads with a bulk white soft filter medium pad?

If you just don't use them at all you will be fine. All they really are is a finer mechanical media and the FX5s have a TON of mechanical media to start with. Also leaving them out will add more space for extra biomedia. So Don't put any extra pads in there. IMO They are not worth it. And I have two FX5s (soon to be 4) And I have used these pads and Let me tell you this WOW do they get dirty FAST. you can turn a white pad solid brown in less then a month.

From what I have seen Matrix doesnt have a lot of surface area, at I looked at a bottle of matrix the other day and it looked just like crushed gravel like you would use in cement...

Yeah you might as well throw some pea gravel in there! best stuff out there is the Eheim Ehfisubstat and Fluval Biomax

or you could throw 12 nylon pot scrubbers in each basket...will save you a ton of money over any name brand bio media
