For a freshwater sump setup I intend to go from filter pads to a moving bed (kauldness media) then into a trickle chamber. My question is what would be the best media for this? Bio ball, can live rock be used on freshwater? Or is there something else that's a better and/or maintainence free option? Stock is discus, black aro, hystrix, and a few tapajos. What are some opinions...will be a 75g sump on a 220g tank.

If you have a moving bed for all the bio I don't really see the need for a trickle setup. You could use bio balls pond matrix or whatever you want but honestly do you need it?? If you are going to get a bunch of k1 that will sure do the job and then some on a tank that size.

Yeah the k-1 should take care of most of it, just wanting to overkill it on the bio filtration, plus the aeration from the trickle. Plus it's just something different I guess, don't see a double chamber bio sump. Probably bc it's not necessary but again, just looking for kill mode and something different.

I understand the idea of going crazy on filtration. It's never a bad thought. Have you looked into how much k1 you are going to use and then the amount of food you feed vs what that amount of k1 is rated for? For me that's an important starting point to really see what I feed and how much media I should need for that. Then of you add extra little stuff great but make sure the bio reactor moving bed is proper.

I have recently started buying pot scrubbies for All my filters. There's better alternatives but not for the $, I don't even want to think about how much actual bio media would have cost to fill a 100g sump

I haven't busted it down into any scientifics yet. Planned on filling half of the chamber with the k-1, letting it do its thing then a large tricke tray to pickup the rest if needed plus to oxygenate the water. From there I should be able to tweak the mount of k-1 needed? Just a simpleton approach I guess.

For about 70-80.00 you could fill it with bio media like k1. It's a knock off but honestly just the same. But then you need an air pump or water pump to boil it and then that adds electricity. But it will never wear out and it will never need cleaning and never hold crud and build nitrates possibly I had that happen before on my system.

It's $100 for 50L of k1 here so I still saved a ton going with pot scrubbies. I was referring to his bio tower. Pot scrubbies would work great
