Post your opinions on why you prefer one over the other?

I personally think that one is not better than the other. Bio rings are very porous, while bio balls have more surface area. I use both in my filters and they both work very well.
Wait shouldn't this be in the setup and filtration forum?

They are used in different areas. In a wet/dry filter, you will use bioballs (pot scrubbies work here too). The water trickles down over the media, but doesn't completely submerge it. The bacteria get more oxygen this way, so presumably more can grow. Ceramic media, like the rings, is used fully submerged like in a canister or HOB filter.

I have bioballs in my sump and ceramic media (fluval biomax, its called) in the canister.

BioMAX for the WIN. I'll never go back to bio balls.

I use Bio balls to degass my water through the trickle filter, they are not fully submerged hence the name wet dry... I use the other media submerged in the sump portion for my bacteria colony, it has more surface area ..to answer your question I use both and each has there own positives....
