Who knows about or uses "bio balls" as a filtration system? I understand they're an external, drip ??? Didn't quite hear the whole story. That's the terminology I heard it referred to, so I don't know if it's the actual name or a nick name.

all they are is a home for bacteria. Run water (prefiltered for big stuff) through bioballs and you have a wet/dry!

so are they desirable or is a normal external canister, i.e. what works now just fine.? Is it better or just different? My bacteria have homes already!

I like wet/dry filters a lot better than canisters for a few reasons:
1: easy as hell to maintain. All you do is change the prefilter material once in a while and you're good.
2:excellent gas exchange. Oxygenation of water is great.
3: you can hide other "stuff" in the sump, and if you have one large enough... you can use it as an isolation tank if you have a fish that gets beat up.
4: with a wet/dry you have the capability to hold a lot more media.
5: you can drill one for easy setup of a drip system
6: they look cool

ETA: here is a step by step of how mine works (on my old tank)http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13133&highlight=wet/dry
