I have never used bio balls before so i know this is a dumb question. Do you flow water through bio balls before or after the water is filtered?

Typically, balls are used as biological, after your mechanical. Bio balls are most commonly used as media in a sump wet/dry filter. There is far better media to use for canisters.

In my opinion bio balls/bio media are the best types of filtration. For one the balls never break down and have to be replaced. The other reason is they don't restrict the flow of water which will give your powerhead/filter a longer life. Let the bio balls/media catch the waste first then put the filter media at the end catch any access. Nice post

Are you suggesting the bio balls be used as mechanical? That would make them "mech balls" not "bio balls" bio = biological
