You can run the pump dry for a few seconds to see if it works, but longer can burn it out.
Bio media, whether bio balls, or scrubbies or lava rock is really all the same, it's just a place for bacteria to grow on, it doesn't really do any filtering of debris. It's the amount of surface area for bacteria that is the main priority.

I personally used the marineland bioballs but i dont think brand makes much difference those were just the size i needed. You need water in the sump to test it. The pump will push water into your tank then fill overflow and return to sump. Is your tank drilled or do you have a overflow box?

And btw so whatcatches debris in the sump? I guess I need to buy some foam pads to put down in it to catch debris...
