I have seen some advertised as sinking and some advertised as floating. When I bought 5 gallons of bio balls off of ebay I figured I needed sinking ones. So I pulled out a bio ball that came in a second hand wet/dry filter and plunked it into a glass of water... it floated to the surface! So I ordered the cheapest ones I could find in the configuration I wanted... with fingers instead of slats and about 1.5" dia.

Bio balls work best when you place them above the water line of your sump and trickle water over them. So it doesn't matter if they float or sink.
