Anybody know how the rena bio-chem stars compare to ehiem substrate?

I bought 90 of them and have been arranging them in all my tanks! I have another filter to fill now and want to know more about them and if bio sponge or sponges or substrate would be better?

I lined some filstars up in my ac500 to create a wetdry effect and since they float i think they would be getting air and bacteria would colonize better than anything!

I use(d) those stars in my canisters, I HATE them.
The floating part is by far the worst quality. I can't speak as to how effective they are since I've replaced most of them with Seachem's Matrix bio media, but floating media in a canister full of water is a PITA. They're extremely over priced too. 10 bucks for 20 stars...come on. :irked:

Eheim media is supposed to be the best, if you can afford it, it more then likely won't let ya down. It might clog up fairly quickly seeing as it's not round, the pro version might be worth the extra money since it compacts less.

I don't like them at all. Switch to Efhi substrate pro or SeaChem Matrix

Each liter of Matrix provides as much surface (<162 m) as 40 liters of plastic balls!

Anybody know the specs on ehiem substrate = plastic balls?

and specs for rena Filstars = plastic balls?

Pet store has pond matrix for pretty cheap is that stuff the same as regular matrix. I have been thinking of stuffing my huge wetdry on my 240 with the stuff for added colinization!

Also does anybody know if you can use to much media in 1 tank. my 125 i have with 2Payara and have a xp3 with 2 boxes of ehiem substrate in it along with 2 fluval 4 internal filters with over 100 filstars the tank nitrates are really low and i do lots of water changes and use lots of amazon addittives!

You can never have too much media in the filter, unless you are jamming it into the impeller shaft. :D Ehfisubstrat pro has the most surface area for commonly available medias.

Ehfisubstrat pro is round, and awesome, ehfisubstrat isn't round and isn't that good IMO/IME.

I got some pond matrix for my wetdry! That stuff has to be better than bioballs. Expensive to fill up half my wetdry with it, the bottom half spent 75 bucks! Lets see if my nitartes can get down to zero!!
Well i am going to buy some more ehiem pro, from everybodys advice that stuff is the best! Does it last forever?
Anybody know the stats on
filstars
ehiem
matrix
biomax
Compared to bioballs????

If you get your Nitrates down to zero w/o water changes or live plants, please post results immediately. Somebody posted a chart about a month ago a good MFK site search should turn up those results......:headbang2
