bio filter size vs tank size?

sorry if this has been ask before. how do you calculate the size of a bio filter to the size of your tank. i have 5-250 gallon tanks and was going to put 50 gallon bio filters on them after the water runs threw a lettuce growing bed. is this ok or do they need to be bigger?

The filter realistically needs to be filtered to the bio load that is in the tank. What fish do you keep in these 5 250g tanks?

commercial operation ? And each bio filter needs to be matched to the stock of the tank. It could anywhere from 3 gallons of bio media to 250

No he means how much bio load (Ammonia and Nitrites ) need to be removed. Seldom do you need a bio filter the same size of the aquarium but if you are commercial I kinda suppose its possible.

NP Whats your stocking amount in each tank / parameters

any where from 10 fish to 100 fish on the tilapia they do better in bigger numbers.
