I've used those before, you just connect an airshose to the nipple on the side of the middle tube. The air raising out of the center will draw water through the sponges and up and out the middle. The sponges will house all of your bacteria. IMO they work great in fry tanks and growouts where the bio load is smaller, and there is a risk of the stocked being harmed by a powered filter, but in something heavier stocked with a bigger load a different type of filter works better. You also need to remember that sponge filters are bio only and all waste will have to be removed with a vacuum, they aren't meant for mech filtration.
