bio filtering vs mechanical filtering

I often read that some people uses so and so for bio filtering and others for mechanical filtering...

Quesiton: What do you typically do to prevent your bio filter from large debris...

Prefilter? placement of the intake higher in the water column?

I use 100 to 200 Micron socks to filter out junk before it pass through my bio media.

on my 225 i have the 4 drains go to the ultima so the bio can catch alot of it and start to break it down. Then on the return some goes through my nu-clear 100 micron canister and uv then back to the tank.
