what is the best bio media in a xp3? i have bio balls now that the guy at the lfs sold me when i replaced my biochemzorb pad...are bio balls even worth having in there as the only sorce of bio filtration or should i get those expensive ceramic rings from ehiem?

I would not use the bio balls in there not enough service area use the eheim substrate the lil balls I use them in all my canisters

SeaChem Matrix is also a very good one.
Look for bio-media with a very high surface area per cubic inch.

Eheim's ceramic rings are designed to be used for a prefilter not a biomedia, you would need to go with ehfisubstrat or ehfisubstrat pro for the bio-media

thats right my bad i meant rena. but isnt it true that pot scrubbers do a poor job in a canister.they need the oxygen to work well like in a wet/dry system?

Pot scrubbers are cheap, but they don't have nearly the surface area of most of the commercially available bio-medias.

you are confusing oxygen with air, there is dissolved oxygen in the water that is in the canister. The reason that a wet/dry is so efficient is because the oxygen that the bacteria consume is quickly replaced because of the increased surface area of the dripping water or the water running over the media.

I believe its been said already but pot scrubbers are a poor choice for canisters because they dont offer as much surface area per total volume as designed bio-media does. They are much better suited for wet/dry sump sytems where filter real estate is not as limited.

Fluval biomax would make a good bio media for your xp3. They have a lot of surface are and don't cost that much ($10/box).
