I am using plastic pot scrubbers in a Magnum 350 cannister filter. Is that a decent bio-media for this type of filter? Would lava rock work better? So far my water is in good shape. I am running the magnum and a fluval on a 125g tank and have Ammonia and Nitrite at 0. However, my fish are still growing and the bioload should increase.

I have just added the bio-wheel attachement to my Magnum 350. Will that help a lot or just a little?

Thanks in advance for your help

the bio wheel will help a lot.

If you are looking for good cheap bio media...use Crushed Coral if you (or someone you know has some laying around)...

This will also help raise and maintain a higer ph.

If you are keeping fish that require a lower ph, you can use a natural gravel just the same.

I've always had really good luck with Hagen's Bio max media, works really well! And one that I've recently started using was Eheim's Ehfisubstrat Pro, both really good bio media! And as a heads up,, most petsmarts have the eheim media on clearance, I think you get a small box something like a liter for $3 and some change, go get some!

I heard pvc works well. If you cut it into around 20-30 1/2" inch pieces it works quite nicely. Ceramic rings works too.

I do not think you need anything but the thick filter pad on the magnum since you have a biowheel attached. Most of my bio "gunk" sticks on the carbon container when I replace the pad. I also found that by leaving the carbon container emtpy I can run it for a couple of months or more without maintenance. Carbon and bio material seem to clog it up very quickly. I would use the magnum for mainly mechanical and the fluval to hold more of a bioload. You could also hook a biowheel up to the fluval output for added bio. Just my opinions, good luck!

I'd use a lot more of those extra Bio-wheel attachments...the 30 and 60 units if I could find them... Once in a while I see one on Ebay but thats about it.
