Do any of you people use bio pellets or similar (also sold as Bio Pearls) in a reactor?
I am running freshwater and have a spare reactor. I am looking for some suitable media for it. The reactor is a phosban reactor but i have no desire to run phosban as i do not want to start messing with my water. I have very low nitrates as i run a drip system, so i just want to add a little more bio filtration. Just not sure on these bio pellets and if they would be of any benefit to me?

From what I understand it is ment for saltwater only. Maybe use sand or I've seen on YouTube a purigen media reactor that looked cool.

Thanks John, i tried the purigen, it fluidised realy well but not good once it neds recharging. Also tried it in a bag but then it does not fluidise very well if at all. I tried silica sand but this did not move one bit with the powerhead that is rated for the unit or a bigger pupm either for that matter. Thats why i am thinking of pellets as this is what the reactor is intended for, but as you say this appears to be for saltwater so not sure if bio pellets would have any positive effect on freshwater.

Have you tried or considered live sulfur and aragonite. It has bacteria on the sulfur and will increase ur bio load and at the same time reduce ur nitrates. I was planning to try it on my tank but don't have the time. This is similar to bio pellets which is strictly for saltwater. The sulfur and aragonite can be used on salt and freshwater systems.

Sorry just saw the mentioned drip system u have. Since u have a reactor this came to my mind.

Dr. tims has NP active pearls which might be similar to what you are looking at. They are for fresh and salt. I think the problem with them in fw is there is no skimmer to remove the dead bacteria sloughing off.

Thanks for the link. It states on the advert safe for ALL aquaria but does not actually state for salt or fresh water, so i am still not sure. There is a very similar if not the same product available in the UK so i am going to contact the supplier and ask the question. If they are for salt only then i have a redundant reactor unless i can find some suitable media to run in it.

I have emailed him about it. It is safe for freshwater. There are also some old threads on here about trying it. If you do definitely let us know how it goes. Will try to find some links later for you
