I have something similar on my current tank. The tank is filtered through a single canister filter, but the return line from the canister flows through this first....

The water flows onto the ceramic rings on the top, then through a floss mechanical filter (which catches a lot to fish poo) and through another layer of ceramic rings before flowing back into the tak.

Hesh - If your current set up is fully cycled and cannot convert ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate without having ammonia/nitrite collect in detectable levels... Then you need more Bio Media. But if the tank is fully cycled and ammonia/nitrite are not in detectable levels then adding bio media will not add any benefits to your system.

But if you want to add more, feel free...

I highly suggest you ad the bio media after the "wool" (mechanical filtration).

Bass - If I read your post correct, your water is being 'filtered' through the canister, then pushed into the pan where it goes through bio media, then through mechanical filtration where fish waste is collected...

If that is correct, I highly suggest you change something so that the fish waste is removed in the first stage of filtration.

When fish waste is pushed through bio media, it clogs the pores of the bio media. The single advatage of bio media is that is has pores that increase it's surfce area making space for bacteria to live. When you allow fish waste to collect in these pores you are decreasing their single value.

+1, with ceramic rings, always try to make them the last step in the filtration and they will be much more efficient for longer

The canister collects most of the waste in it's top mech tray then the water flows through 2 more trays with ceramic rings before it returns to the tank, but I just added the extra filtration on the top for a little extra filtration (or so I thought). It has been running like this for over 2 years with no issues.
Also, this tank will be coming to the end of it's life within a few weeks, when I will have my new tank up and running with a sump :D

heres another similar option.

3 drawer tray
mech pads/ floss in the top.
bio media in the bottom two.
drill holes in the bottom of all 3 trays. then all you have to do is run a hose to the top, and it will all drain back down into the tank.

cool stuf bro....thnks.. i hv ta buy a container i guess hmm...
