I would just use that as a wet/dry bio tower filter. Fill it with bio media and the black tray in the bottom put filter floss/pads in for mechanical filtration. Put a submersible pump and a heater in the open are on the bottom.

Yea thats what i was thinking Egon. Tower has a tray that goes on top to thinking about carbon up there and floss/pads on bottom tray. I know i need the submersible pump in the bottom but what else do i put in the bottom open area..

Bottom open area: If possible you can build a wall with PVC and egg crate/light diffuser material right under the bio tower. Fill that area with more bio balls or ceramic bio media. The wall keeps the pump and heater separate.

well I only need heater like a month out of the year i live in miami. And thats what i was planning on doing building like a box out of eggcrate and putting bio balls and those sponges everyone uses. would that work ?

That all comes down to the size pump you intend to use, fish size, feeding, basically how much poo is this filter expected to clean :D

Look for a pump that will cycle the total water volume 4 to 5 times per hour or look for two pumps that combined will cycle the water 4 or 5 times. I like dual pump systems anyway just for redundancy. When a pump fails your only down 50%. Of course it's nice to have a backup pump also so now you’re looking into buying three pumps for this system :)

Every additional fish tank you set up stick with this plan. Then you only need one back up pump for all your tanks. I have 5 large tanks running now, 11 total pumps. Just one back up and it can be used as a submersible or an external depending on what tank it's needed for.....
