hi guys,

so i picked up a 4 drawer tower that i'm going to put into a large rubbermaid bin for the bio portion of my filtration.

what would you guys stock it with? i have 2 retic stingrays only in the tank currently.

inlet will have filter socks for debris to start.
i was thinking of doing 2 drawers of pot scrubbies.
possibly a drawer of lava rock.
and the final drawer, filter floss, unless there are way better options for me to be putting into these drawers.

any input?
thanks in advance!

SCRUBBIES, (pot scrubbers) are an excellent option, and cost effective as well...I use a Matala or JapMat as the top layer just to help with anything that might get over the top of the socks...not necessary just another type of media that would be in place while cleaning the socks... ;)

To calculate the amount of scrubbies needed to fill a given area, multiply the LxWxH in inches and divide by 9, this will give you the number of scrubbies you need to fill that area...

thank you zennzzo. the japmat idea sounds good.

each drawer is 22x15x7 (LWH), so by the looks of it, i'll be using 257 pot scrubbies in each drawer (rounded up).

how many drawers would you recommend of pot scrubbies? are 2 full drawers enough?

any opinions on lava rock? useful/useless?

what else should i be putting in my other 2 drawers?

Has anyone determined the bio load of scrubbie to Gals of water.
exampl: 100 gal tank needs X amount off scrubbie to maintain a solid biological environment.

Tank size is only one of the factors in determining what is needed...Bio-load is probably the most important factor to consider...;)
and somewhere in the set up and filtration forum, there is a formula that shows how to calculate how much ammonia is removed out of a given area of SCRUBBIES, Lava Rock, Bio-balls etc...It is actually a link to an article that was written elsewhere...

keep any mech filtration (like floss) at the top of the tower and your bio media on the bottom. I use ceramic noodles and pot scrubbies in my drawers.

is this going to be the sole filtration on the tank? again, what would you ultimately like your stocking to be?

sorry for the delay in response guys, was out with my dad getting all of the supplies for the plywood tank/stand i'm building.

the tank in question will be 6 feet x4 feet x20 inches high (300 gallon roughly).

the sole occupants of the tank will be my 2 reticulated stingrays (roughly 7 inch discs on both).

eventually i would like to get an eheim 2262, but for now, it would be the biotower and the fluval 405 i currently have that would go onto the tank till i upgrade to the eheim.

thanks guys :)
