Hey, so I just realized something that I probably should have thought of a long time ago. I never rinse the bio-wheels on my HOB's. I mean never. I rinse all my other bio media in tank water whenever it looks like its got a good build up of sludge on it, but I have never rinsed the bio-wheels in my HOB's which have been running for quite some time. I guess I should rinse them too huh? Anyone out there never rinse them? Do they get all clogged up if you dont rinse them?

Also, anyone with emp 400's - the water that runs through the spray bar that pushes the bi0-wheels comes straight from the tank, it doesnt go through the filter first, right? If so, which I think is the case, I think Im going to put some pre-filter media on the intake to do some mech filtration before it hits the bio-wheel. Anyone do this already?

I thought it said on the instruction for the Penguin 30 never to clean the bio-wheel? I vaguely remember reading that somewhere. But f it is done in tank water, I guess it wouldn't hurt (I could be wrong).

I would think it would be good to rinse all the accumulated debris off. I mean, it clogs up the pores, decreasing the available area for BB, plus all that debris just sits there and pollutes your tank. As long as your not killing off the BB with chlorine, I dont see why not. Next time I change the water Im going to rinse all of my bio-wheels off with the tank water.

I have heard that you don't ever clean them, but mine never build up much of a coating.

Yep, the ole swoosh and swish method.:D

You guys and your technical jargon :grinno::grinno::grinno:.

But your all right, if they slow down or get lopsided, "swoosh and swish" in tank water (in a bucket).
