The 75 gallon tank i bought came with a canister filter and a penguin 350 hob filter, but the penguin filter did not come with bio wheels. From what i can tell the only use for the bio wheels is that it it holds a lot of beneficial bacteria. Between the canister filter, the cartridges of the penguin filter, and substrate do you think the bio wheels are necessary?

You could probably do without the bio wheels depending on your fish load but keep in mind those other mediums that you mentioned will eventually be compromised or disturbed at some point which could harm the bacterial colony. With the bio wheels in use that is not likely to become an issue.

You can use filter without bio-wheel, but it does add more bio-bacteria if wheel keeps spinning lol.:-)

So the canister filter came with the pads, and bio balls only, and not the Porous ceramic rings, or activated carbon. Suppose I could only get one or the other at the moment, would you suggest both the carbon and ceramic rings, or the bio wheels?

Tbh never owned any canister filter's , but I do know they are very versatile. Type in canister filter media in the search bar, and see what others recommend.:)

Btw if you have enough room adding ceramic rings in a mesh pouch for the penguin along with sponge's would just add more bio-filtration. I never was into the cartridge's that come with hob filter's replace with rings, filter floss, sponges etc.
