Hey guys,is it possible to do a 30 g reef set up using an emperer 400 + an emp 270 hobs in stead of a sump for filtratation?kinda like a little wet/dry system.I know a sump is the way to go,,but I already have this equipment .I'll be getting a decent coralife fixture and skimmer, advice for this newbie would be greatly appreciated.

i used a couple for a while to increase surface agitation in my tank but took them off as they were trapping crap in it. These can be a pain to clean out, but you can use them if you keep them clean.

Jworth probobly ... check that... I'll guarantee he's got more experience than I do... but IMO, I'd say if you were doing FO or FOWLR it'd be fine. I'd be extremely cautious with reef, But if youre getting a sump anyways.... just do that, Craigslist the Biowheels, and call it a day

I would avoid wet/dry esque systems for SW because as mentioned they trap detritus, increasing nitrogenous wastes at the same time as processing them. That is a lose win situation, which leaves you no where.

Gotta keep everything detritus free IMO. That goes for all aquaria
