In all my previous canisters I've used Biomax (or some other ceramic/sintered glass media) for bio filtration but my Nu-Clear 547 came with bio balls. They're a little different the regular bio balls I've used in my sump. They're bigger (~1") and much denser (more like heavy plastic balls with holes drilled through them). I guess this means they'll sink instead of float (good for submerged use) but they probably have even less surface area than regular bioballs. According to the manufacturer the bioballs provide "over 60sq ft" of surface area.
Anyways, I wonder if there's a reason they included bioballs. They'll probably allow for a higher flow rate than other medias. Any other ideas of why they decided to use bioballs? I'm debating switching them out for Biomax/Pond matrix but that would be pretty expensive since this beast holds around 3gals of media and I'm not sure it's worth it.
