I use the "Herbie" method and have very little noise at all.

PLease explain the Herbie method.

Durso. I made two for my 240g. Wish I had that diagram when I made it though. LOL.
I eyeballed the whole thing from memory.

The Herbie method was created by a member on Reef Central with the username "Herbie". Essentially, I run my main drain line in my overflow, through a gate valve, to my wet/dry. The "return" hole is used, instead, as an emergency drain and goes directly to my sump. The standpipe is 1" higher than my regular drain and only takes water should my main line clog.

The gate valve is used to match my drain speed to the output of my pump. In my case, my pump can run full-out without back pressure concerns.

I then run my pump return(s) over the back of my tank with rigid pvc.

For more detailed info, go to RC or Google and search. It is an excellent, quiet and flood-proof method when done properly.
